Happy New Year!

Happy end of 2010 and Happy New Year for 2011 - I can't believe it! 2010 was meant to be my year - it was the year of the tiger but nothing was blowing me away... I didn't win lotto and I didn't meet the man of my dreams, however on reflection and in summary a lot of good, life changing stuff happened and a few crappy things too. Best wishes for the year to come!

We in Brisbane have managed a few rain free days and we have been making the most of them.
The minute the rain stopped there was a chorus of lawnmowers across the neighbourhood singing out to me to add mine to their droning. I was only too happy to get stuck into my lawn that had grown about 20cm in a week but the dratted mower wouldn't start so I had to be contented with the weeding.
The weeds in this humid, wet weather are having the run of the place and kept me busy for a while.
The backyard has enough mud to fill a mosh pit, sadly without the cool music and scantily clad 19 year olds but with my ipod turned up loud enough and squinting my eyes at the right angle at the large stinky ibis haunting my yard I can almost pretend...
We ventured down to Wynnum with friends on the first afternoon of no rain although it was still overcast. Not too overcast to get saturated in the sea pool and water park. I love Wynnum and as I like to recall my oldest son announcing when he was 5 on a trip there, "I love Women".

There is some pretty good op shopping to be done there - I found these sweet pineapple plates, some books and these shot glasses which were a timely find because I was presented with a trusty "cowboy" drinks kit for my birthday ~ so that's YNE sorted!

 {*please note ~ I cannot, to save my life, get the one mix
to float atop the other ~ but it all tastes the same in the end}

The boys and I and our visitors have been having fun with
this stick-on blackboard frame on our fridge - my New Year Resolution!
{which fittingly, is written in chalk and will be replaced by a drawing of Ben 10 by tomorrow}

hold on tight for the new year is coming fast or maybe... let go!

Wished up but not washed out!

Amidst the torrential rain yesterday I celebrated my birthday and got lots of lovely birthday wishes and pretty cards and gifty goodness. There was an old fashioned spice cake made by Mum and a ricotta berry cheesecake with whipped cream and blueberries made by my sister and a surprise lamington cheesecake slice made by my friend Jamie! Oh dear!

Some birthday gifts ~ sitting in the letter rack, from "Happy Animal Time" postcard book by Junzo Terada {a fabulous blog write up with more yummy pictures here at the Daily Smudge} from Chronicle Books  which has 30 very happy postcards {absolutely beautiful vintagey illustrations in gorgeous colours} - I chose this one with the umbrella for today!
And, soooo hard to choose my favourite so I may have to get some more, but I think this one my friend gave me is it ~ "miss lemon" by art and ghosts from a series of prints and frames {to go with them} published by lalaland found online here and have also been spotted around Brisbane at discerning boutiques and even a news agent!

To avoid cabin fever, today during a short reprieve from the downpour, we grabbed umbrellas and wellingtons and escaped for a walk...

I picked some of these from a large bush growing wildly along the bike path and took some cuttings to hopefully grow in my garden

 You know you want to too!

Merry Christmas Everyone!

 Christmas Lights!

 it took a village to make this gingerbread cottage ~ about five adults, four kids and
three extra adults to take photographs

the boss lady trying to sweeten me up

late night wrapping and a pretty kitten

Not ready for this Christmas to be over ~ we may have to extend it for a few more days...
Am very full and happy and tired. The boys loved everything they received, lots of lovely presents for me too, a highlight being a new external hard drive {joy! ~ no more cranky messages from my mac}.
Have loved catching up over the last week with friends, doing the crazy last minute all night shop at Chermside, staying up late baking and wrapping presents and spending a chilled out day today with my family. Finishing off tonight with a lovely big family dinner with family from far away who we don't get to see very often so it was extra special, but all over too soon.

Christmas with the boys

This year I have been able to spend a lot more time with my boys during the lead up to Christmas and I am enjoying it so much more. All of those Christmassy things that I love are so much more exciting
and take on a whole new meaning and value when you are sharing them with your children.
Please click on some of the blogs I follow, there are so many beautiful ideas, recipes and activities to discover, too many to mention. So many bloggers have created some beautiful FREE downloadable christmas tags and other tutorials, gift and wrapping ideas etc.

For example ~ Christmas tags & paper in PINK found at Domestifluff, check out her whole blog - there is heaps more and she is so stylish - no excuse for crappy gift tags now!

Jenny B. Harris from allsorts has, amongst all of her lovely ideas too see on her blog, has created some gorgeous digital christmas activities for children {which I also enjoyed}. A Gingerbread House to decorate and a little doll to dress in Christmas Clothes - so CUTE!!

Amanda Blake Soule, Soulemama, in her beautiful way, is elving with her family.
She never fails to delight and inspire me.

And in my house...

the over-the-road neighbour brought across some HUGE lollipops
for the boys a couple of mornings ago!

making more tags, this time with hand stamped balsa wood shapes and scrapbooking paper.

Prepared for Christmas?

The answer is no - but somehow I'm not stressed...

I spent most of yesterday cleaning but it doesn't seem to have made much difference..

not the most creative use of MT Tape but I like it...
MT tape is my new labeling tool of choice because it's pretty and it peels off easily and you can just write on it with a permanent marker. I do have a brother p touch which is also handy but the refills are just too expensive - I am labeling everything...

I got mine here...
Little Jane St. ~ Winn St. Fortitude Valley
I love this shop, good to see stuff from local artists and crafty people and while you are there you have to, HAVE to stop at Flamingo Cafe right next door..
I shared a sandwich - turkey, sage, cream cheese and walnut which they were kind enough to serve the generous sized halves on separate plates each with a pickle and I had the most cooling and delicious juice "Nana Crystal" but the bestest bit was the iced mocha which absolutely was too fairytale for words ~ came with cream AND nuts AND sprinkles AND a wafer AND a cherry on top!
{suburban retro kitch treat for the eyes too with a special mention going to the novelty salt and pepper shakers workin it like your nanna}
BEAUTIFUL service!

Will have to venture back for some photo ops but will be sure to go while the Valley Laneway markets are on...

Keeping Things

here are some things I have kept since childhood and every year when I unpack them from my christmas box I am glad i did....

Father Christmas
possibly from the 70's.
I remember him being filled with lollies.

More avon perfume bottles again.
These were from my childhood and were given to my sisters and I in the late 70's early 80's.
I had a little white snowman with a pink hat as well but I haven't seen him for quite a few years... he probably melted.

Ads taken from "Woman" magazine 1958 {erm.. obviously not from my childhood}

dont you just love the colours! and doesn't she look so overjoyed with her sellotape!

This year I covered a simple table top tree in vintage christmas paper and christmassy magazine articles from the pages of the same vintage mag.

Christmas tree is up... pity the rest of the house looks like the 1st of January

After  a huge amount of requests to see the tree {ok one person, thanks Leesa}, here it is. I have been holding off on taking photos because the weather has been so dark and gloomy ~ a professional photographer would have come in handy here, perhaps I will have to invite them over for morning tea very soon.....

1957 ~ Desk Set starring Spencer Tracy and Catherine Hepburn and 1984 ~ Falling In Love starring Robert De Niro and Meryl Streep

It's at this time of year that I love watching the sort of movies that are not directly christmas movies as such but a still very Christmassy and sentimental and nostalgic and where are my vintage hankies?
Mostly I love the visual aesthetics of the films and the eras they come from. If I could take screen shots of the sets and costumes that I love... well that would be a whole other blog...

One of my most favourite parts of the epic design sponge site is the living in section capturing the style and visual icons from movies and matching them with real life products you can buy!!! or drool over.. ~ it is absolutely brilliantly done.
Here is one for Christmas, a Wallace Family Classic Must Watch, for you Cath...

May Fortune Be Your Friend

We are venturing out to see the Christmas lights around the neighbourhood tonight.
Ours are not up yet but our front door has a wreath and snowflakes and looks pretty!

{made using some vintage trimmings and buttons, a postcard and lots of glitter and snow in a can}

{plum puddings made by my boy's great grandmother ~ we love putting these out every year}

 {I was going to make a mini pompom garland - but when I found this ball of yarn for a few dollars at spotlight I thought I would save myself the trouble! It's so pretty and I've put it all over my tree too!}

{a harvest from Jill's Mother's organic garden ~ the purple beans are gorgeous ~ a lovely present!}
